For both those pursuing parent coaching full time, and those looking to enhance their current roles, we recommend an accredited parent coaching certificate.
The Family and Parent Coaching Certificate at Concordia University, St. Paul provides two key factors for effective parent coaching:
  • Technical coaching skills
  • Evidence based resource in family communication, lifespan development, family decision making, and family systems, structures, and relationships.

While some coaching programs may give you skills to connect with others and how to market yourself, they don't give you the background knowledge about family and behavioral sciences to give you credibility in your craft.

Similarly, you can take courses in family sciences and be well versed in all of the research out there and still lack the skills you need to connect with people effectively.

Finding an accredited program like the Family and Parenting Coaching Certificate at Concordia University gives you the whole set of skills required to connect with and walk alongside individuals and families as they discover and build their strengths.

Learn first,
create change second.

We believe that research-based practice is at the very foundation of quality parent coaching. But being a parent coach is about more than just having knowledge and telling parents what to do.

A Parent Coaching certificate program provides both the theoretical knowledge and research, and also the practical skills and tools to effectively walk alongside their clients and make the biggest impact.

I think this program is VITAL for Individuals working with families.

It's not a theoretical class - it's a hands-on course that really teaches professionals how to best interact with clients/families.  In my opinion, some degree of Coaching class is valuable.

An example of how it's helped me grow (or rather, step back) is as a Breastfeeding Counselor.  While we pride ourselves in being evidence-based, we are not clinicians - we are counselors - here to support and encourage.  Every day I see my BC colleagues lecturing moms on "evidence-based information" - and frustrated when moms don't follow their advice.

We have forgotten that we aren't clinicians, but support persons, and no longer take the time to do what I learned in Parent Coaching - listening, affirming, guiding parents through identifying their OWN goals, etc.

The Parent Coaching program helped me grow personally and professionally.  It changed how I interact with everyone - not just parents or people I work with.  It taught me to listen, not lecture, and only educate when invited to.

- Arica Goulet, M.A. (Parent Coaching Certificate Recipient)
